Based on Cat Studies with Straight Lines, a detail from Ernest A. Batchelder's Design in Theory and Practice, published 1910. By denying his students the curved line, Batchelder moved them from observation toward construction, asking them to think like makers rather than illustrators. In his words, the aim was "to retain the distinctive character of a natural form without sacrificing the distinctive character that claims interest from a design point of view."
